Wissenswertes

  • Each hair carries bands of colour, which is what gives the coat its warm shimmer.
  • One of the oldest recognised breeds in the show ring, though its true origin is still argued over.
  • Climbers by nature: shelves, doors and the top of the fridge all count as floor.

Für wen geeignet

People who want a cat in the middle of everything, and who can offer height, toys and company through the day.

Pflege

The short coat needs little more than a weekly comb. Give it tall places to climb, or it will invent its own.

Geschichte der Rasse

Named after Abyssinia, now Ethiopia, because the first show cats were said to have come from there with returning British soldiers in the 1860s. Genetics point instead to the coast of the Indian Ocean. The British breeding lines were almost wiped out by the two world wars and rebuilt from a handful of survivors.
