Every Fold descends from Susie, a barn cat found in Scotland in 1961.
Kittens are born straight-eared; the fold appears at about three weeks, if at all.
The gene that folds the ears affects cartilage throughout the body, so every Fold has some degree of joint change.

Care

Check the ears weekly and watch for stiffness in the tail, ankles and knees. Folds are never bred to Folds.

History of the breed

In 1961 a shepherd named William Ross noticed a white barn cat with folded ears at a farm in Tayside. Her name was Susie and every Fold descends from her. British registries withdrew recognition in the 1970s over the joint disease the gene carries; others still accept it.
